"for the future memories...Thanks" June 21 edition

This research study compares which areas of the brain are active during remembering and which are active during imagining. Guess what! They are often the same areas. I was also interested in the different kinds of memories people have -- episodic (events), semantic (words), and generalized knowledge. One scientist commented that episodic memory seemed to be the most important for thinking about the future. The scientists hope to use their findings to help people with memory problems.

What are your thoughts on this article? Do you remember events like people and places or words better? Do you think you would like to study the brain?

"Lead Exposure leaves its mark" June 21 edition

This article summarizes a research study that was begun in 1979 and ended recently. The researchers used people from Cincinnati who lived in areas that had high amounts of lead. They found that not only did lead have negative effects on the children, but those effects lasted until they were adults. People (especially boys) who had high levels of lead in their bodies had smaller brains and were more likely to have been arrested.

What do you think? Should all children be tested for lead poisoning? How can we reduce lead in our environment?
